The Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive, supported by the National Association of Letter Carriers, will be held this Saturday, May 11, rain or shine. Stamp Out Hunger is the nation’s largest single-day food drive and is extremely important this time of year. In spring and summer, food supplies and charitable donations are typically lower and as a result many families go hungry.
So how can you help? It’s easy, just pack up a bag (or two, or three) of unexpired non-perishable items and leave them at your home mailbox this Saturday for pick-up by mail carriers and volunteers. Some of the most needed items include canned meats, veggies, fruits and soups, as well as peanut butter, boxed macaroni and cheese, and cereals. In some areas, mail carriers may be leaving special donation bags in advance, but if not, any plastic bag will do. Just remember to tie your filled bags at the top to make it easier for those that are picking them up.
All food collected will be delivered to local community churches, food banks and pantries for distribution. Last year, Western New York communities donated nearly 1 million pounds of food and helped numerous families in need.
