The mission of the Transit Authority Police Department (TAPD) is to ensure the safety of transportation for the communities we serve in the Niagara Frontier.
The TAPD serves the traveling public, operating under the Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority (NFTA), which provides public transportation across Erie, Niagara, and Genesee counties in New York State. Additionally, the NFTA oversees both Buffalo International Airport and Niagara Falls International Airport.
All Transit Police Officers are certified by New York State in accordance with the New York State Bureau of Municipal Police Training. The department has an authorized strength of 80+ sworn officers and several civilian personnel. Transit Police Officers have the authority to exercise police powers and duties in traffic and criminal matters within the NFTA’s jurisdiction, which encompasses Erie, Niagara, and Genesee Counties.

The Transit Police headquarters is located at 1404 Main Street in the City of Buffalo, with sub-stations located at the following locations:
