In 1980, cut and cover construction began as part of Buffalo’s future light rail line beneath Main Street.  Steel pylons were driven into the earth before digging the tunnel to keep the walls from caving in. The (new) sonic hammer technology transmitted high frequency vibrations along the 40’-50’ steel piles that liquefied and displaced the earth below.  As a matter of fact, rumor has it that local vendors were having issues keeping items on their shelves due to all of the ground-shaking activity.

A similar process is being used currently in the construction zone right next door to the MTC.
