The NFTA marked the 100th anniversary of Buffalo Niagara International Airport (BUF) on September 25, gathering airport officials, representatives from the Niagara Aerospace Museum, and members of the Aero Club of Buffalo to celebrate a century of service to Western New York.
Kim Minkel, our Executive Director, had the honor of reviewing and describing the items placed in the time capsule 50 years ago, in 1976. Airport officials also revealed new commemorative items that will be included in a fresh time capsule, ensuring that the airport's history is preserved for future discovery in 50 years. Originally opened as Buffalo Municipal Airport on September 25, 1926, BUF is one of the oldest public airports in the United States. Today, it remains an essential transportation hub that connects residents, visitors, and businesses in Western New York while bolstering the region’s economy and aviation sector.
The post-event gathering took place in Satterfield’s, the airport’s latest pre-security restaurant and social space. The venue is named in honor of John M. Satterfield, a renowned aviation pioneer often considered the airport's father.
For more information on the time capsule, please see: Time Capsule and Time Capsule Contents. The NFTA will be depositing items into a new time capsule, and we will provide more details when known.
