On Tuesday, May 19, the NFTA held a Memorial Day flag-lowering ceremony at the MTC and at some of our Metro stations to honor the men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice while serving in the United States Armed Forces.
The ceremony united NFTA employees, local veterans, and community members in a moment of shared unity, reflection, and respect. The observance featured the ceremonial lowering of the American flag, accompanied by the solemn playing of "Taps" by Doreen Watson's son, Lucas.
As part of the commemoration, remembrance tables will be displayed at several NFTA locations, including the MTC, Niagara Falls International Airport, Buffalo Niagara International Airport, and all NFTA bus garages.
Each remembrance table serves as a tribute to America’s missing and fallen heroes and includes symbolic elements representing their sacrifice and the enduring hope for their return:
- An empty chair and a round table, representing the unclaimed seat and everlasting concern for those missing in action.
- A white tablecloth symbolizes the pure intentions of service members who answered the call to defend their nation.
- A single red rose and red ribbon, signifying the love of family and friends who faithfully await answers.
- A slice of lemon and a pinch of salt, reflecting the bitter fate of captivity and the tears of loved ones longing for their return.
- An inverted glass symbolizes the missing service members unable to share a toast.
- A lit candle, representing a beacon of hope for their return.
Memorial Day is a solemn reminder of the courage and sacrifice of the brave men and women who gave their lives in service to our country. The NFTA is proud to recognize and stand in support of the veterans and military families who continue to inspire our communities every day.
