There's a new addition to the newly renovated Metro's Allen-Medical Station -- it's a new sculpture called Gut Flora. The Albright-Knox Art Gallery commissioned the work for the NFTA in support of their combined efforts to promote public art within our public transportation system.
Artist Shasti O’Leary Soundant created the work which is about 15' tall and 25' wide and made up of 260 brightly colored interlocking pieces that are designed to resemble a “beneficial bacteria colony.” The title Gut Flora refers to the recent scientific determination that these bacteria are essential to good health and should be cultivated and encouraged. The placement of the artwork is extremely relevant because the station is the base of the UB Jacobs School of Medicine and Bio Sciences.
Gut Flora is a wonderfully energetic piece of public art and a great adornment within the station.
