The NFTA held a workshop on the Metro rail expansion project on Tuesday night at Sweet Home Middle School. The open house was held to provide the public with updated station design concepts, recap of traffic analysis and preliminary environmental impacts for the 7-mile expansion as well as obtain valuable community feedback.
The current Metro Rail system stretches a little over six miles. The expansion would start where the northbound route ends on Main Street near UB's South campus and continue from Kenmore to UB North. The project would connect all three of UB's campuses, including the medical campus, essentially extending the system by seven miles. Ridership for the rail expansion is estimated at 30,000 commuters daily, which could spur about $1 billion in economic development for Western New York.
The project has a long way to go before construction can begin, and we will continue to gather community input for the next few years. The expansion could take up to 10 years before it is complete. Continued updates can be found at https://www.nftametrorailexpansion.com/.
