The International Aviation Snow Symposium (IASS) was held in Buffalo from April 25 to 30, bringing together worldwide airport snow and ice control professionals. Hosted at the Buffalo Niagara Convention Center and the Buffalo Airport, the week-long event highlighted the vital work of winter operations teams that keep aviation safe and efficient in the harshest weather conditions.
The IASS is a valuable resource for airport operators, aviation professionals, and the wider industry. It provides a platform for knowledge sharing, technology discovery, and networking with winter operations experts. Participants gain practical insights into improving airfield snow removal, enhancing safety, and implementing cost-effective measures for winter operations.
This year's symposium presented a diverse lineup of events and activities, including:
- Operator of the Year Award: This prestigious award went to Tom Locurto from the NFTA and recognizes excellence in snow and ice removal operations and for going above and beyond.
- Balchen Post Award: This special recognition was given to an Aviation member for outstanding contributions to winter operations, highlighting innovation and dedication.
- The SnoPo Wing Challenge: Operators tested their precision and control in a series of timed challenges, showcasing the skill required to maneuver massive snow equipment under pressure.
- Snowplow Rodeo: The week concluded with a high-energy showcase, where operators demonstrated their talent and finesse behind the wheel, navigating obstacle courses and competing for bragging rights as the best in the business. The NFTA's Chris McBride came in first this year, having won the rodeo four times, including three consecutive wins. NFTA's Cody Haseley came in third.
With attendees from across North America, the IASS is the premier event for professionals dedicated to keeping runways clear and ensuring passenger safety during winter weather. We were thrilled to be a part of it. Congratulations Tom, Chris, and Cody!
