"My father found refuge in this country after escaping a violent civil war in Guatemala. I am thankful each day that I was born in this country and never had to endure the traumas of ongoing terror and human rights violations. As a child, I attended a bilingual elementary school on the West Side of Buffalo where students were immersed in the Puerto Rican culture daily. We had opportunities to attend many special events and enjoy Christmas songs in Spanish, Three Kings Day traditions, and a Latin band that played at assemblies and concerts. Not only was this impactful but for us students to see and be taught by teachers who looked like us and had similar experiences gave us a sense of belonging and empowerment. My history and experiences have made me the friend and co-worker you know today."
